30th Annual General Meeting of the Coconut Growers’ Association of Sri Lanka: A Successful Event

The Coconut Growers’ Association of Sri Lanka (CGASL) held its 30th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday, 10th August 2024, at the Mahinda Silva Auditorium, Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research & Training Institute, Colombo 7. This year’s AGM was a significant event, bringing together over 150 members of the association, with key discussions, presentations, and a technical session that proved immensely valuable for the coconut growers in attendance.

The AGM began at 9:30 AM, chaired by Mr. Jayantha B. Samarakoon, the immediate past president of the association, who played a pivotal role in leading the proceedings. Following the received nominations, Mr. Cryshantha Jayawardena was appointed as the new President for the year 2024/25. Mr. Shakila Wijayawardena was elected as the Secretary, and Mrs. Mala Goonawardena was appointed as the Treasurer. The newly appointed board of directors included Mr. Mahen Madugalle, Mr. Caesar Fernando, Mr. Harindra Abeysundare, and Dr. Anuruddha Jayathilake, while Mr. Nalaka Amarathunga, Mr. Prasanna Amarathunga, and Mr. Channa Imbuldeniya were appointed from the floor.

The event was graced by Mr. Janaka Dharmakeerthi as the Chief Guest and Prof. Buddhi Marambe as the keynote speaker. Prof. Marambe, a distinguished figure in the Sri Lankan agricultural industry, delivered an insightful keynote address on the climate resilience of the Sri Lankan coconut industry, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices to ensure long-term productivity.

In addition to the AGM proceedings, which included the presentation of the annual report for 2023/2024, adoption of the audited financial statements, reappointment of auditors, and election of the board, the event also featured technical sessions and panel discussions. These sessions were highly engaging, with active participation from members, making it a productive platform for sharing knowledge and exploring future directions for the coconut industry.

The AGM was supported by several key sponsors. AgStar and A. Baur & Company served as the Gold Sponsors, while CIC Agribusiness, Premia Sensing Ltd, DIMO Agribusiness, and Silvermills were the Silver Sponsors. Commercial stalls were set up outside the venue, showcasing products and services beneficial to the coconut growers.

Overall, the 30th AGM of CGASL was a resounding success, providing valuable insights and networking opportunities for all attendees, further strengthening the coconut growers’ community and enhancing their preparedness to face future challenges in the industry.

The event highlighted the strong leadership within the CGASL and set the stage for a promising year ahead under the guidance of the newly appointed board.
